A Smart Survey Funnel
A simple survey with a few multiple choice questions and a couple of open-ended questions will help you easily collect this information from your users - whether they are first time visitors or long time customers.
The data you collect will help you understand what marketing efforts are working well, what is driving traffic to your site and what areas could use some improvement. In addition, this type of survey will tell you why they chose you product over your competitors.

Explain the Reason
People are not going to spend a lot of time doing something that does not directly benefit them. If you ask too many questions, they will simply abandon the survey.
You don't want your prospects or customers to feel frustrated and wonder why they should be spending time giving you all of this information.
To increase participation, clearly outline why you are collecting this information. It's important to let your participants know they are playing a huge part in helping you make your product better and their feedback is very valuable to you.
One more thing you can do is allow respondents to skip open-ended questions. This way if they don't want to answer a specific question, instead of abandoning the survey, they can skip that question and move to the next one.

For e.g., there is a good chance our prospects would remember what google search brought them to our DAP site if we asked that question on the main landing page (or on the thank you page after they signup) rather than weeks or months later when they might not remember the details.
