How To Use DAP’s Default Password

DAP has a feature where you can ask DAP to always generate a pre-determined, default password of your choice for all new members.

So all new users will be assigned the same default password, which of course, they can change as soon as (or any time after) they login.

This is especially useful if you want a third-party service like Aweber – instead of DAP – to send out the new member’s “Welcome Email” which contains their email and password.

Since DAP is unable to pass the randomly generated password to Aweber, instead, you can setup a default password by going to

Setup > Config > Default Password

This can be found under the Miscellaneous section on that page.

So if you set this password to say, changethis, then DAP will give out the same password to all new users.

Then, in the welcome email you configure at, say, Aweber, you would put the Aweber merge code for email id, and then enter this pre-selected password (because you already know what it is) into your Aweber email, like this:

Hello {!firstname},

Welcome to Example.com. You may log in to your member’s area at:

Email: {!email}
Password: changethis

Thank you,

– Admin from Example.com

And if you ever change the default password in DAP, don’t forget to also change it in your welcome email at Aweber (or 3rd party email service).

Also, don’t use the default password in any subsequent emails, other than the Welcome email (very first email sent to member through Aweber), because the member may have already changed their password by then.

WARNING: You must have also set up DAP/Aweber integration first before you attempt to do this.

[…] their affiliate id, etc. If you want Aweber to send out the password, at this time, there’s only one workaround. We have this on our to-do list, and we will be implementing this feature in a future […]

Is this workaround still valid or has DAP been updated to pass the unique user password on to Aweber?

Workaround still valid.

Can you set the default password only for individual products? Or is it a general setting for every product I offer within DAP?

Okay. Two questions:

With a generic default password set, can anyone who is not registered just enter an email address if they knew the password?

Any idea when the update will be ready for us to send a unique password within the Aweber welcome email?

That's why it's not recommended. >>Any idea when the update will be ready for us to send a unique password within the Aweber welcome email? < < We have not yet looked into aweber apis and whether they support sending of password. But if they do, we will be able to support it within the next 6 months.

In using the workaround to have Aweber sign up user for DAP (and not the other way around) you gave sample text for the welcome email from Aweber. The following portion perplexed me:

—start excerpt—
Welcome to Example.com. You may log in to your members area at:

Email: {!email}
Password: changethis
—end excerpt—

Should that be a URL instead of email, since we’re telling them they may “login here”?

Just want to make sure I understand.

Yes, you need to add url of your DAP login page in addition to the email/password for login.

I would like to know as soon as this is available please, Veena! Cheers

I’d like to second Mick’s implied suggestion re: “the sooner the better” for being able to send a password via Aweber. That’ll be an important step for DAP.

Agreed. It all depends on what Aweber offers. We will look into it and if aweber supports it, we will try to incorporate it into dap 4.4.

Jeff, how are you currently getting customers’ emails who have just bought your product into your Aweber ‘buyer’ list? Are you using the DAP default password? Or offering another free goodie to entice them? Or something else? Just interested. Cheers.

Mick: I’m still trying to figure out which subscriber flow to use, which is why I’m hanging around these blog posts. i’m basically going to be running a sign up / affiliate program for a zero cost product, so no payment event need be part of the process.

When I go to Setup > Config > Advanced > to set up default password. There is no advanced option

I have version 4.2.1

Why is that?

Veena Prashanth - May 3, 2012

The config options have changed in dap 4.2.1.
You will find it under the Setup > Config -> Miscellaneous section.

Hi Veena and Ravi,

Thanks again for an absolutely wonderful membership program and for all of your support… It’s obvious how much you two care about your product and customers! 🙂

Just curious if you know whether or not AWeber’s APIs will support DAP sending random passwords for use in AWeber e-mails and, if so, is this still slated for V4.4?

Thanks again!

Would it be possible to force people to change their password on their first login?

That way I could set the default as a ‘difficult’ password they are likely to want to change and it has the appearance of being random.

A ‘changeme’ password makes it clear it can be passed on to others – something I’d rather avoid with paid for products.

Can we allow user to create their own password when they first sign up? Many websites allow a user to create their own password since it is easier for user to remember. I know that they can go in to myprofile and change their password at anytime but it would still be much better if the user had this control from the start.

Thanks,
Robin

Hi Robin,

>>Can we allow user to create their own password when they first sign up? << Is this for a 'free signup' or for a 'paid product purchase' ?

Hi Veena!

my request for initial user selected passwords is for both free signup and paid membership.

Thanks,
Robin

Hi Robin,

If you use the dap shopping cart to sell, you can add a ‘choose your password’ to the checkout page.
You can enable it in dap admin => payments => cart options page.

Can’t do this for ‘free signup’.

Thanks,
Veena

Veena

With reference to this:

>>With a generic default password set, can anyone who is not registered just enter an email address if they knew the password? < < Yes. That's why it's not recommended.

If the person does not have permissions within DAP to that paid product, they won't be able to access the pages even if they know the password, right?

I am getting so many support issues with AOL, MSN, Hotmail, Yahoo, Ymail etc, that I am thinking of switching to a common password to begin with. Is it still not recommended? And if so, why? Thanks.
