Last Cookie

Last Cookie Before Initial Signup Wins

DAP uses “Last Cookie” to award commissions.

So if someone (who has never purchased anything from you before) clicks on the affiliate link of Jack, and then a few hours (or days) later, clicks on the affiliate link of Jill, and then goes on to purchase your product, then DAP awards the commission to Jill, whose affiliate link was the one clicked most recently.

So, in general, to protect your affiliates, you shouldn’t be promoting your site generally on the web using your own affiliate link (as DAP admin). That way, you never compete with them for commissions on your own site.

However, using your own affiliate link works great, say, when you’re marketing in specific markets, like say on Adwords. Even though Adwords allows you to set up and track goals, using a special affiliate can help you figure out exactly how much revenue you have earned through this affiliate.

So, for Adwords marketing, you could create a new user called “Adwords Affiliate” and then use this user’s affiliate link as your landing page URL. Of course, you could also customize this affiliate’s link to land on any page of your web site (or any site for that matter) by adding the text “&p=yoursite.com/anypage.html” to the end of your standard affiliate link, like this…

LifeTime Affiliates: Cookie Not Relevant

Once a member has signed up and is attached to an affiliate, then it’s that same affiliate who will get lifetime commissions for all purchases made by that member, for life. Once an affiliate is assigned to a user, it cannot change again for life. So after someone has become a member and is credited to an affiliate, it does not matter what cookie they have on their computer when they make a purchase – the credit will always go to original affiliate that they’re already attached to.

How long does the cookie last?

It lasts forever right now. Doesn’t expire.

The cookie lasts 1 year starting DAP 3.8.

The cookie will last a year as long as the user does not click on another affiliate link or does not clear the cookies manually.

If the user clicks on one aff link (say Aff A), cookie gets set, now if the user clicks on another aff link (say Aff B) before registering, then the cookie will point to the last clicked affiliate’s Id (Aff B).

And the cookie expiration is one year from the time of the last click.

What happens to the affiliate commission for a continuity product after month 12? Does the referring affiliate suddenly quit getting the commission on month 13? If so, does it revert to admin? I hope I am misunderstanding this, because I can see how affiliates would not be impressed if their monthly commission stops arbitrarily on a continuity sale they referred.

If you have set the “Commission Recurring?” to “Y” in DAP Affiiates -> Set Commissions page, the commission to referring affiliate will continue as long as the payment comes in.

Hey Veena,

Is it possible to override the “last cookie” setting?

Hi Molly,

Once a member has signed up and is attached to an affiliate, then it’s that same affiliate who will get lifetime commissions for all purchases made by that member, for life. Once an affiliate is assigned to a user, it cannot change again for life.

If the member has not signed up yet or the member account is not yet attached to an affiliate (check dap users -> manage page -> Aff Id), then the last affiliate link the user clicks on (before signing up) will win.

Hi Veena,

To be clear, does this mean that cookies no longer expire after a year as you described in this thread on 5.9.12?

Are DAP’s affiliate cookies now lifetime?

Thanks

>>Are DAP’s affiliate cookies now lifetime? << No, the cookies are not lifetime. They expire after a year. But after an affiliate gets associated to the user's account, then that connection is for lifetime. After that, cookie does not matter. Once a user is connected to an affiliate, that connection lasts forever.

Thanks, Veena. That I get…I was just wondering if maybe you could put it on your “to do” list to allow us to override that setting, so that we can make it “first affiliate cookie set sticks until they buy” rather than “last affiliate cookie before they buy wins.” It would just be nice to have that flexibility–not vital–just nice :). But, as always, whether you add that or not, DAP is the best there is!

Thanks Molly :).

We like to make everything configurable but the problem is more configuaration options we add, the more confused the users get and more mistakes they make during setup or they setup one config and forget about having set it and then wonder why it’s not working a certain way etc…

Anyway, what you are asking for is on our to-do list and we will get to it soon.

I understand your dilemma for sure. The beauty and the curse of building something so powerful! But I’m glad to know that that particular configuration is on its way ; ).
